50 years of European University Institut in Florence, and one question at the center:
How can Europe remain legitimate,resilient and capable of acting – in an age of fragemntation, platform dependency and accelerating technological change?
EUI President Patrizia Isabelle Nanz captured the spirit beautifully: “Europe is not built through treaties alone, nor through markets, but through knowledge, culture, memory, through the capacity to think together across the lines that would otherwise divide us.”
Across the anniversary programme, this question appeared from many angles:
• democratic resilience and Europe’s future capacity to act
• governance complexity and institutional legitimacy
• strategic autonomy in an unstable world
• social rights, skills and preparedness as foundations for the future
I was honoured to participate in the 𝐄𝐔 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐛 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 at the EUI. One insight stayed with me:
E̳u̳r̳o̳p̳e̳’̳s̳ ̳c̳h̳a̳l̳l̳e̳n̳g̳e̳ ̳i̳s̳ ̳n̳o̳ ̳l̳o̳n̳g̳e̳r̳ ̳o̳n̳l̳y̳ ̳r̳e̳g̳u̳l̳a̳t̳i̳o̳n̳.̳̳ I̳t̳ ̳i̳s̳ ̳g̳o̳v̳e̳r̳n̳a̳n̳c̳e̳ ̳c̳o̳m̳p̳l̳e̳x̳i̳t̳y̳ ̳i̳t̳s̳e̳l̳f̳.̳
The future of Europe depends therefore on creating spaces for:
• creativ experimentation
• continous learning
• 360 feedback
• fast course correction
At the same time, another EUI workshop explored the idea of an 𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 – a sovereign European communication infrastructure beyond outrage-driven platforms.
This is where I believe the next frontier of democratic innovation lies:
• Not merely in better content.
• Not merely in better regulation.
• But in building the missing i̳n̳f̳r̳a̳s̳t̳r̳u̳c̳t̳u̳r̳e̳ ̳f̳o̳r̳ ̳d̳e̳m̳o̳c̳r̳a̳t̳i̳c̳ ̳l̳i̳s̳t̳e̳n̳i̳n̳g̳.
For me, this is also the promise of #EchoPolis / #eKairos: combining physical encounters, digital deliberation, conversational AI and facilitation to make patterns, blind spots, minority views and shared concerns visible. Because democracy does not only need louder voices. It needs better listening.
